Sony Exec Says Nintendo Died Three Years Ago
Sony Exec Says Nintendo Died Three Years Ago Jack Tretton, the Executive Vice President for Sony Computer Entertainment America, recently sat down with GameDaily BIZ and revealed some interesting pieces of information. For starters, Nintendo went out of business in June 2003, and everything we've seen since then have been phantom pains.
"The DS was just a figment of people's imaginations," Tretton explained. "Not only has it not sold well, it didn't even exist."
Tretton pointed out that the popularity of the PS2 was so massive it demolished Nintendo's sales and morale, and the company simply folded as a result. "There is no Nintendo anymore, and there never will be a Nintendo!," Tretton exclaimed.
The Sony VP then went on to demonstrate how his company continues to expand. "The PSP is so popular, everyone owns at least two devices and thirty games," he expounded. "Five billion Playstation 2s have been sold this year alone."
According to Tretton, the PS3 should prove to be so popular that it will cause cable companies to go bankrupt, "because the only reason to use a TV will be to play a PS3" he said.

Phil Harrison Talks Downloadable PS1 Games on PS3
Following today's PS3 press conference in which Sony demonstrated its online PlayStation Store, 1UP was able to speak with Sony's Phil Harrison regarding the PS1 and PS2 titles that will be available for download (though don't expect to see downloadable PS2 games for a while).
According to Harrison, unlike how the PS2 would enhance PS1 games with texture smoothing and what not, the PS3 will offer no such visual enhancements (including resolution enhancements) for the previous generation titles. "They are as exactly as they were," said Harrison, who claims Sony preferred to rather deliver them in their original state.
Sony's intention is to eventually have its entire back catalogue of PS1 games available for download through the online PlayStation Store, barring any titles that can't be released because of legal issues (such as licenses for talent or music tracks having expired). "Unfortunately, when these games were originally developed, licenses weren't negotiated with this sort of future distribution in mind," said Harrison. He mentioned particularly looking forward to being able to offer people games that are essentially impossible to find, such as Motor Toon Grand Prix or Vib Ribbon. At the launch of the PS3, titles such as the original Syphon Filter and Twisted Metal will be available.
Harrison also explained how the PS1 downloads will initially be for play only on the PSP, but will later work on the PS3 when the emulation software is available. The beauty is that one download will be playable on both PlayStation machines, console and portable. According to Harrison, we can expect the games to be playable on PS3 by year's end. Of course, actual PS1 and PS2 games (not downloaded) will play on the PS3 right from the start.
As mentioned in the press conference, a piece of content such as a PS1 game can be downloaded on up to five PS3s, meaning that when you log into your profile on someone else's PS3 you have the rights to download it there as well.

Sony Demos PlayStation Network
Sony has demonstrated an online service called "PlayStation Network" to support its upcoming PlayStation3 (PS3) video game console.
The "PlayStation Network" uses a navigation system already available on Sony s hand held game player, the PlayStation Portable (PSP). The new service will offer multiplayer gaming, chat, voice or video communication, downloadable gaming content like weapons or maps, and the ability to shop at the online PlayStation Store.
The online PlayStation Store will allow users to download game demos, game-related content, and downloadable casual games, including titles developed by Sony Computer Entertainment World Wide Studios exclusively for download and play only on PS3.
While online play, chat, and other basic features will be offered absolutely free from day one, the users will have to pay to download some content. The downloadable games provided by Sony's units will cost less than $15 (Rs 690 approx) at launch.
Moreover, users will be able to create a unique and secure PlayStation profile to communicate with other PS3 users, and use an electronic wallet to buy online content. Shoppers will be able to add PlayStation Store funds from their credit cards or gift card-like PS3 Cards to their accounts.
In addition, gamers will be able to browse the Web, store and view pictures and video, as well as download and listen to music on the console. The Web browser will be included with the PS3, and will be free of charge.

IGN doesn't like the SIXAXIS
Sony demoed a PS3 debug unit for IGN (seems they *still* don't have retail units to show to the press, despite launch being less than a month away),
and while IGN liked a lot of what they saw, the controller was a major disappointment:
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/738/738858p2.html
"... we'll take a look at one last thing - possibly the most controversial aspect of the PS3: the controller. Prepare to be shocked though: we don't really like it all that much. True enough, you can go along with Phil Harrison's proclamation that it's already the industry-standard controller amongst umpteen-million gamers around the globe, but, arguably, that doesn't make it the best. Personally, we can't help but feel that the SIXAXIS (as it's now known) has been sadly neglected when viewed alongside the rest of the PS3. Compared to Microsoft's uber-comfortable Xbox 360 pad, the SIXAXIS feels cheap, plasticky, uncomfortable and disconcertingly light - almost as if it's going to fly out of your hands during those more extreme gaming moments."
"More worrying still, the newly-designed lower L and R shoulder triggers feel more like they belong on an early controller prototype than the near-final model. Replicating the 360 pad, rather than being simple shoulder-mounted buttons, the triggers are now hinged horizontally along the controller, with pressure forcing them inward along the bottom - like triggers then, really. Trouble is, they're placed almost unnaturally low meaning we found ourselves operating them by jamming our fingers in between the hinges to apply pressure, rather than using the buttons themselves. What's more, the triggers are convex, with no grooves to keep your fingers in place - an issue further compounded by their smooth finish, offering no resistance against your finger tips. Invariably we found our digits slipping off with the triggers snapping back to their default position. Bah. Of course, the PS2's Dual Shock pad wasn't without its faults either but we still learned to live with it. It's just a shame that Sony hasn't used its
resources to bring its controller up to next-gen standards along with its cutting-edge hardware."
