October 20, 2006 - Shockingly enough we were on-hand at Sony's Playstation 3 Gamer's Day event yesterday. Considering all the crap we've given Sony in the past, it was sporting of them to invite us. KillZone 2 wasn't at the show, but plenty of other games were.

Phil Harrison Talks Downloadable PS1 Games on PS3

Following today's PS3 press conference in which Sony demonstrated its online PlayStation Store, 1UP was able to speak with Sony's Phil Harrison regarding the PS1 and PS2 titles that will be available for download (though don't expect to see downloadable PS2 games for a while).

According to Harrison, unlike how the PS2 would enhance PS1 games with texture smoothing and what not, the PS3 will offer no such visual enhancements (including resolution enhancements) for the previous generation titles. "They are as exactly as they were," said Harrison, who claims Sony preferred to rather deliver them in their original state.

Sony's intention is to eventually have its entire back catalogue of PS1 games available for download through the online PlayStation Store, barring any titles that can't be released because of legal issues (such as licenses for talent or music tracks having expired). "Unfortunately, when these games were originally developed, licenses weren't negotiated with this sort of future distribution in mind," said Harrison. He mentioned particularly looking forward to being able to offer people games that are essentially impossible to find, such as Motor Toon Grand Prix or Vib Ribbon. At the launch of the PS3, titles such as the original Syphon Filter and Twisted Metal will be available.

Harrison also explained how the PS1 downloads will initially be for play only on the PSP, but will later work on the PS3 when the emulation software is available. The beauty is that one download will be playable on both PlayStation machines, console and portable. According to Harrison, we can expect the games to be playable on PS3 by year's end. Of course, actual PS1 and PS2 games (not downloaded) will play on the PS3 right from the start.

As mentioned in the press conference, a piece of content such as a PS1 game can be downloaded on up to five PS3s, meaning that when you log into your profile on someone else's PS3 you have the rights to download it there as well.

More than 20 games due before the end of 2006

Sony has unveiled the first batch of titles available during the 'launch window' of the PlayStation 3 - which will run from November 17 to the end of 2006.

There are 21 titles all together, three of which - Resistance: Fall of Man, NBA 07 and Genji: Days of the Blade - are first-party games.

The rest of the line-up features titles from all major third-party publishers, including familiar gaming brands such as Call of Duty 3 (Activision), Fight Night Round 3 (Electronic Arts) and The Eldar Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Bethesda Softworks).

Other titles confirmed are Blazing Angels: Squadron of WWII and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas from Ubisoft, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance and Tony Hawk's Project 8 from Activision, plus Namco Bandai's Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire and Ridge Racer 7.

Electronic Arts will be releasing Madden NFL 07, Need for Speed Carbon and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07, while 2K Sports has NBA 2K7 and NHL 2K7 ready for launch.

The rest of the line-up features F.E.A.R. (VU Games), Full Auto 2: Battlelines and Sonic the Hedgehog (both from Sega) and Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom (Sony Online Entertainment).

All titles are due to retail for just under USD 60 (EUR 48).

Sony Demos PlayStation Network

Sony has demonstrated an online service called "PlayStation Network" to support its upcoming PlayStation3 (PS3) video game console.

The "PlayStation Network" uses a navigation system already available on Sony s hand held game player, the PlayStation Portable (PSP). The new service will offer multiplayer gaming, chat, voice or video communication, downloadable gaming content like weapons or maps, and the ability to shop at the online PlayStation Store.

The online PlayStation Store will allow users to download game demos, game-related content, and downloadable casual games, including titles developed by Sony Computer Entertainment World Wide Studios exclusively for download and play only on PS3.

While online play, chat, and other basic features will be offered absolutely free from day one, the users will have to pay to download some content. The downloadable games provided by Sony's units will cost less than $15 (Rs 690 approx) at launch.

Moreover, users will be able to create a unique and secure PlayStation profile to communicate with other PS3 users, and use an electronic wallet to buy online content. Shoppers will be able to add PlayStation Store funds from their credit cards or gift card-like PS3 Cards to their accounts.

In addition, gamers will be able to browse the Web, store and view pictures and video, as well as download and listen to music on the console. The Web browser will be included with the PS3, and will be free of charge.

PS3 Pricing...

Sony PlayStation 3 Pricing for U.S.

Ready for the pain? The sticker shock? Here it is: $500 and $600 for the two Sony PS3 console price points we already knew about, $50 for a SIXAXIS wireless controller, $15 for the legacy PS/PS2 memory card adaptor, and $25 for the remote for the Blu-ray player.

As a bonus to the first 500,000 PS3 buyers, Sony is throwing in a Blu-ray copy of Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, which won’t otherwise be available until December 12th. So if you’ve REALLY got to have Talladega Nights, you can take out a loan to buy the most expensive movie ever.
